Business water prices aren’t always as straightforward as companies might wish them to be – but then again, it takes a lot to get clean water to your taps day after day without fail. And unlike household bills, business water costs are split into wholesale and retail charges, each covering different parts of your supply and service.

Wholesale charges are those that cover the sourcing, treating and transporting of water. The second element of any given water bill Is the retail fee – which accounts for billing, customer support and account management.

Once organisations understand this structure, it becomes much easier to compare suppliers, identify better value and avoid paying more than absolutely necessary.

What goes into wholesale water prices?

Wholesale water prices cover the physical supply and treatment of water and wastewater. These costs are set and regulated by Ofwat and are the same no matter which water retailer a company chooses.

Wholesale charges cover the cost of supplying water to a premises, removing wastewater and treating it safely. These charges are calculated using a rate per cubic metre of water used – along with fixed standing charges that contribute towards maintaining and investing in the infrastructure required to deliver water services.

Wholesale costs are regulated, which means they don’t change when businesses switch retailers.

What goes into retail water pricing?

Retail water charges cover the service side of commercial water supply. While wholesale prices are fixed by region, retail costs vary between suppliers and present businesses with the opportunity to compare providers and make significant savings, as well as secure better service.

Competition in the business water market means retailers can offer different pricing structures, added services, and support levels. For example, at Everflow we are proud to offer support and advice on opportunities for efficiency savings and consumption reduction.

Comparing retailers allows you to choose a supplier that offers both value and a service that works best for your business.

What makes up a business water bill?

A business water bill is made up of several elements, combining regulated wholesale charges with your retailer’s service costs.

You’ll also see standing charges, which are fixed daily costs, and metered usage charges based on how much water your business uses.

Your total bill reflects both your location and consumption, alongside the retailer you choose to manage your account.

Why business water prices vary

Business water prices can differ depending on your location and regional wholesaler, how much water your business uses, and whether your supply is metered or unmetered. Retail pricing structures vary too, which is why comparing suppliers can make a real difference.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch my business water supplier?

Yes. Since the English business water market opened to competition in 2017, most businesses, charities and public sector organisations can choose their water retailer. Switching won’t affect your water supply, water pressure or wastewater services as your regional wholesaler still manages the physical infrastructure.

Will switching the water supplier interrupt my supply?

No. Your water supply and wastewater services remain exactly the same because the local wholesaler continues to deliver and treat your water.

Why are wholesale charges the same no matter which retailer I choose?

Wholesale charges are set by your regional water wholesaler and regulated by Ofwat. These costs are fixed by location and apply regardless of which retailer manages your account.
