It reflects the principles of the waste hierarchy, where preventing waste in the first place is the number one option but where reuse and recycling is a responsible alternative that helps to reduce environmental damage. Waste disposal sits at the bottom of the hierarchy and should only be considered when the previous three are not possible.
For businesses, that means looking beyond what’s going into the bin and considering whether it needs to become waste at all. For example: could packaging be reused? Could better commercial glass recycling prevent recyclable bottles and jars entering residual waste? Could a dedicated food waste collection ensure organic material is processed more effectively?

Why should businesses aim for zero waste to landfill?
Sending less waste to landfill can help conserve resources and support the transition towards a more circular economy. But there are commercial benefits, too.
Improving resource efficiency can reduce disposal costs and even help businesses buy less in the first place – which helps to protect the bottom line and improve profitability. If packaging, materials and products can be reused rather than immediately discarded, you can potentially reduce both procurement and waste management costs.

Is zero waste to landfill realistic for businesses?
