What happens if you don’t go digital in time for the PSTN Switch Off?

The PSTN Switch Off is fast approaching, but what happens if your business doesn’t go digital in time? Here are the risks of delaying your move to Business VoIP.

On the 31st of January 2027, the PSTN Switch Off will see the UK’s traditional analogue Public Switched Telephone Network replaced by digital, internet-based services. For businesses, that means moving away from traditional analogue phone lines and making sure any systems that rely on the old network are ready for the change.

And this isn’t simply about office phones. Alarm systems, lift emergency phones, payment terminals and other equipment can also rely on analogue connections. Yet only around two thirds of UK businesses are currently prepared for the switch, according to recent research.

The important thing to remember is that the switch isn’t optional. So, what happens if you don’t go digital for the PSTN Switch Off in time?

Your phone services could stop working

The most obvious consequence is losing your traditional telephone service. Once analogue services are withdrawn, businesses still relying on them won’t simply be able to carry on as normal. That could mean customers being unable to reach you, employees struggling to communicate and important calls being missed.

Moving to Business VoIP before the deadline allows calls to be made over an internet connection instead, keeping your organisation connected while opening the door to a more flexible way of managing business communications.

Safety and security systems could be affected

Your phones might not be the only things connected to an analogue line. In fact, most organisations have a range of connections that utilise copper-wire connection.

In order to tackle this issue, businesses need to identify other equipment that could depend on the PSTN, including security and alarm systems, emergency communication systems within lifts, CCTV monitoring and other equipment.

Failing to identify and upgrade these connections could result in important systems no longer operating as expected after the switch.

That’s why businesses need to audit their entire analogue estate rather than treating the PSTN Switch Off as purely an IT or telephony project.

Payment systems could be interrupted

Some payment terminals and related systems may also rely on analogue connectivity. For businesses taking payments from customers, discovering that a system isn’t compatible with the new digital network after analogue services have been withdrawn could cause significant disruption through lost revenue and weakened security.

Retailers, hospitality businesses and other customer-facing organisations in particular should check their payment infrastructure well before the deadline and arrange upgrades where necessary.

Your business could experience operational downtime

Add all these issues together and the biggest risk is generally downtime. Interrupted phone calls, inaccessible systems and communication problems can quickly affect productivity and inhibit business as usual.

Internally, teams may struggle to communicate with each other (particularly remote teams) while customers and suppliers find it more difficult to contact you.

Waiting until the last minute also leaves less time to identify problems and resolve them before they start affecting everyday operations.

Why making the switch now is a good idea

Moving early isn’t simply about avoiding disruption. It can be an opportunity to improve your communications, save money and improve security.

Business VoIP can offer better call quality and greater flexibility than traditional analogue telephony, while making it easier to support employees working across different locations.

That can be particularly valuable for remote and hybrid teams. Rather than tying a business telephone number to a physical desk and traditional phone line, digital communications can give employees greater flexibility over where and how they work.

Moving early also means your business can plan the transition properly rather than trying to migrate as demand increases closer to the deadline.

What should UK businesses do now?

Start by auditing your existing systems. Identify analogue phone lines and check whether alarms, lift phones, payment terminals or other equipment could still rely on PSTN connectivity.

Next, speak to your connectivity provider about what needs to change and schedule your migration with plenty of time to spare. Employees should also be given appropriate training so they’re comfortable using any new systems.
