Simpler Recycling is the government initiative to help and simplify the recycling process within businesses and while it first came into effect on 31st March 2025, micro-businesses with fewer than 10 employees were excluded from the initial regulatory requirements. However, this exemption is set to end and micro-businesses now have until 31st March 2027 to arrange for proper waste recycling streams.

The scheme was brought in to promote a circular economy, increase recycling rates across the country and reduce greenhouse emissions. While having proper recycling waste streams might seem like a best practice, it will become a legal requirement for small businesses, so it’s important to take action now and prevent unnecessary fines.

Many thousands of UK businesses should already be complying with the Simpler Recycling initiative, as the requirements for organisations with 10 or more employees came into effect on 31st March 2025.
