Summer is coming – how are water levels in the UK right now?

2025 saw one of the most significant UK droughts in years, costing Britain’s arable farmers an estimated £800 million in lost production. So, as we enter summer 2026, what is the state of the UK’s water supply and how prepared are we for scarcity?

It’s the same every year. As the temperatures rise and things begin to hot up, we often see concerns raised over water supplies and the dreaded hosepipe bans. But the threat of water scarcity is one we should never take lightly and it’s important for organisations in all industries to spare a thought for reservoir levels as we enter the drier, warmer months.

Although water levels naturally change throughout the year, prolonged dry spells and increased summer demand place additional strain on supplies. So, where do water levels in the UK currently stand as we approach the warmer months?

Water levels in the UK right now

According to recent government reports, there is some positive news. The UK has officially recovered from drought conditions after what has been said to be the wettest autumn and winter season. So much so, that many reservoirs, rivers and groundwater supplies have been replenished, with reservoir storage of 95% – above average at this time of the year, improving water levels across the country.

However, while the overall picture is more positive, in comparison to the previous year, we certainly can’t say that 2026 will be free from droughts. In particular, there are several areas of the country – such as Essex, Cambridgeshire and Derbyshire – that haven’t seen reservoirs fully replenished and may feel any prolonged dry spells more keenly than others.

What’s driving UK water level changes

While it’s true that climate change is the primary factor affecting water reservoir levels in the UK, it’s not the only one. Reports estimate that the population in the UK will reach over 73 million by 2036 – compared to the current population of around 70 million. Any increase in population naturally places additional strain on resources, and we can expect to see increasing demand as these figures grow.

Infrastructure challenges also play a part. The UK’s ageing water infrastructure is losing around 19% of the water supply through leakage, highlighting the urgent need for upgrades. While work has started on a £104bn investment in our water infrastructure, it is not expected to be completed until 2030.

Why water levels matter for businesses

With rising utility costs, businesses across the UK are experiencing in real time that water levels are not just an environmental concern. They have a direct impact on businesses and its operational costs. Especially vulnerable are those in hospitality, who rely on water as part of their functional day-to-day routines.

When reservoir levels drop, businesses may face greater pricing pressure. At this point, it becomes increasingly important to compare the water retail market and consider a business water switch. Thousands of UK organisations still aren’t aware that they can compare contracts and that switching can save hundreds and even thousands or pounds annually.

How Everflow helps businesses manage usage

While our water reservoir levels are currently above average, one might wonder why water bills are still increasing. This is because many of the increases in overheads are caused by much-needed water infrastructure upgrades. However, there are still a couple of things businesses can do to lower their operational costs.

Starting with an EcoMOT is a great first step. Once our team of experts visits your venue to audit your water usage, they will also inspect for leaks, identify opportunities for savings and provide recommendations for water usage monitoring devices.

It’s important to remember that while water reservoir levels in the UK are currently stable, only those who remain focused on water conservation and efficiency efforts will stay competitive and prepared in the long run.
