What’s a SoGEA adapter?

The traditional telephone landline based on the UK’s legacy copper network will soon be consigned to history. But there are still thousands of businesses around the country with premises featuring phone sockets.

That’s where the SoGEA adapter comes in.

A SoGEA adapter is a simple plug-in device that lets you upgrade your broadband connection and gain fast, reliable internet without an active phone line.

At Everflow we specialise in helping businesses just like your access high quality broadband and telephony solutions that are secure, easy to adopt and affordable. Get in touch today to find out more.

What is SoGEA?

SoGEA is an acronym for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access. This rather long and confusing term is a broadband-only connection that delivers the same speed and performance as Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC).

Essentially, SoGEA is a broadband solution that utilises the fibre network managed by Openreach (which connects to local street cabinets) and then relies on the short-distance copper cables that links the cabinet to individual premises or properties.

SoGEA is often referred to as “part fibre” or “standard fibre” connectivity, which gives organisations a cheap, simple and secure way to move away from analogue phone line connectivity to a digital service ahead of the Big Switch Off in 2027.

Importantly, SoGEA also continues to support voice telephony through a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) system, making it possible for businesses to use their handsets as they would have done previously.

What type of business needs a SOGEA adapter?

SoGEA is a great solution for many different types of business – but particularly useful for SMEs, remote workforces and those with limited access to full fibre solutions. In particular, organisations in rural areas will find SoGEA to be a great option where full fibre is unlikely to be available in the immediate future.

A SoGEA adapter is an important solution because it has the ability to keep your business connected while the national fibre infrastructure continues to be upgraded. No disruption. No drama.

Our SOGEA adapter is ideal for:

  • Shops, cafés, restaurants and salons using digital systems like chip-and-pin machines
  • Offices still using alarm or legacy phone systems
  • Small businesses switching to digital who need a bit more flexibility
  • Remote workforces where staff may need improved access to reliable, secure internet

Basically, if you're using older equipment that still needs a phone connection, this adapter is your new best friend.

What are the benefits of a SoGEA adapter?

Business connectivity solutions can often feel overly complex and difficult to install. But a SOGEA adapter is as simple as it comes. Just a simple little adapter can bring your communications into the 21st century in a flash.

Join the thousands of businesses opting for SOGEA broadband because it:

  • Offers an instant plug-and-play solution – just connect and go.
  • Saves money – no need to replace your devices straight away.
  • Doesn’t require an engineer – you can install it yourself in minutes.
  • Works with your broadband – seamless connection over your SOGEA line.
  • Future-ready – a smart step in your move to digital.

How do I fit a SOGEA adapter?

It’s as simple as:

  1. Plug the adapter into your SOGEA router.
  2. Plug your device (like your card machine) into the adapter.
  3. Done! Your device now connects over broadband instead of a landline.

Switching telecoms provider can save you key costs and secure you a better deal, but it’s important to do your research and take the right steps. PSTN stands for the Public Switched Telephone Network, which is due to be switched off in December 2027 by Openreach. The switch will impact both businesses and households alike, as all traditional phone lines and internet connections will no longer have connectivity.

In order to remain connected, businesses must make the switch to VoIP. This is a widely offered telecoms service. The right telecoms provider can help you make the move to VoIP seamlessly and without headaches.

No. SoGEA is not the same as full-fibre broadband. SoGEA does not use fibre optic cables that run directly to your premises (FTTP). Instead, it relies on a combination of the existing fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) infrastructure and the copper cables that connect the cabinet to your premises. The SoGEA adapter then makes it possible to gain part fibre digital voice and broadband connectivity.
