A UK Geographic number is a number specific to a town or city within the UK. Geographic numbers begin with 01 or 02.
A single line is a phone line that maintains once call at a time, like a telephone you might use in your own home. These lines cannot handle multiple calls at once.
RJ11 is the type of connector commonly used for telephone cables. Typically, they have 4 or 6 positions (slots) for electrical contacts.
RJ45 is the connector used at the end of Ethernet connection and are larger than an RJ11. This connector typically has 8 positions for electrical contacts.
The PSTN Switch Off is the process of shutting down the old copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and moving all voice calls to an internet-based system, known as an all-IP network. This means traditional phone lines will no longer be available, and all calls will be made over the internet using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
The switch-off is happening in the UK for a few reasons:
- The old PSTN system is outdated and expensive to maintain.
- Fewer people are using traditional phone services, as messaging and video calls have become more popular.
- Switching to all-IP networks allows for better integration of voice, data, and video, making communications more efficient and cost-effective.
The PSTN supports traditional phone services like regular landlines, ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) lines, and some older broadband connections. It can also be used for important services like alarms and lift emergency buttons. So, before the switch-off, it's essential to check what services in your business rely on the PSTN and how they might be affected.
The PSTN will be replaced by VoIP, which is a flexible and cost-effective system that offers more features than traditional phone lines. With VoIP, you can make calls, send messages, and even video chat from anywhere with an internet connection. It’s also easier to expand, so you can quickly add more lines or users as your business grows.
SoGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access. It is a broadband service that provides internet access without the necessity of a traditional phone line. Traditionally, broadband services in the UK have required both a broadband and a phone line package. However, with Single Order Generic Ethernet Access, the phone line is not needed, which means you only receive the internet connection via the Openreach network.
SoGEA is available from Everflow via our Evernet and Everconnect products.
A SoGEA broadband offers similar speeds to standard Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) broadband because it uses the same infrastructure. The typical speeds you can expect are: Up to 80 Mbps download and Up to 20 Mbps upload.
80 Mbps download: This is the speed at which data (like web pages, videos, and files) is transferred from the internet to your device. With 80 Mbps, you can comfortably stream HD or even 4K videos, browse the web, video call, and download large files quickly. It's suitable for multiple users, even if they're using the internet at the same time.
20 Mbps upload: This is the speed at which data is sent from your device to the internet (like uploading files, sending emails with large attachments, or participating in video calls). 20 Mbps upload is ideal for smooth video conferencing, uploading high-resolution photos, and other data-heavy tasks.
FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) is a type of broadband connection where fibre-optic cables run directly from the internet service provider to your business. This is different from other broadband type like FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet), where fibre only goes to a street cabinet and then uses slower copper wires for the final stretch.
FTTP is available with Everflow via our Evernet+ and Everconnect+ products.
With both products we offer speeds of up to 330 Mbps for downloads and 50 Mbps for uploads.
This means 330 Mbps download speed and 50 Mbps upload speed, which is suitable for:
Video Conferencing: You can run multiple high-quality video calls (HD or even 4K) across different teams without any disruptions. Large teams on platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet will experience smooth video and audio.
Cloud Services: Uploading and downloading large files to the cloud (like Google Drive, Dropbox or business applications) happens almost instantly. This is especially important if your business relies heavily on cloud storage, SaaS applications, or large data transfers.
Multiple Users/Devices: Businesses with many employees using the internet at the same time will benefit from fast connections. Even with 20+ users, activities like web browsing, email, and accessing online systems are seamless.
E-commerce & Website Hosting: For businesses with online storefronts or heavy web traffic, 330 Mbps ensures your website can handle multiple visitors and loads quickly for customers.
VoIP: High-speed internet allows for clear, uninterrupted voice calls over VoIP systems, even while other data-heavy activities are ongoing.
Ideal for: Larger businesses or growing companies with many employees, high data use or reliance on cloud-based tools and video conferencing.
Stable communication: Video, audio and screen-sharing during virtual meetings will be stable, ensuring smooth interactions with clients and colleagues.
Faster sending of large files: For businesses that frequently send large files, 50 Mbps allows for efficient file uploads. Sending large documents, designs or videos to clients or external partners will happen quickly, boosting productivity.
Real-time collaboration: Uploading and sharing files in real-time with clients or colleagues across different locations becomes easier, especially for industries like marketing, architecture, or creative work that involves large file sizes.
